Santa Ana sailing on Ventura coast

SAIL CHANNEL ISLANDS HOME

Depending upoon which wind gauge you checked today, you were (A) terrified (B) attentive, but nervous
(C) sailing near Ventura.

Wiley We did (C). After looking at the the SB buoy, where winds  were 5-7 while winds at the Oxnard airport and points south were in the mid-20′s gusting to the mid-30′s, lurking in the lee of the mountains seemed fairly prudent.
We started on the deepest reef and kept the jib furled. We finally  headed towards CI. A boat about our size blew by with no reef and a 120+ jib flying. About half mile ahead, we saw her furling the jib and then hauling down half the main. The wind continued to increase as  we neared the mid-point of the Oxnard Plain. With no reef points left and no reason to go anywhere in particular, we tacked and headed back toward Ventura. We saw 8+ a number of times on our Catalina 36, which is a fairly impressive number.

The wind advisory remains in effect through tomorrow, but we’ll checkout the conditions near Ventura and up SB way. I bet we’ll go again and will most likely pick plan C.
