Ad Hoc sailboat race on Southern California coast
I’m not a voyager.
I’m not a solo navigator.
I’m not a racer.
But damn, it feels good to be out front.
OK, that’s all very contradictory, but two sailboats going the same direction usually find themselves in an undeclared race. There’s no committee boat, no starting line and no finish line, but crews that normally won’t get up to make small trim changes will bust their butts, scratch their heads and experiment with the jib cars looking for the tiniest fraction of a knot advantage.
The beauty of the unannounced, undeclared, no-winner or loser race is that it’s over as soon as a substantial advantage is gained or the sun gets low on the horizon. Or nothing much has changed.
Call it Racing for recovering Type A personalities.
First rule in recovery: it’s important to know what’s important.
