Larry and Karla Pruitt learn the basics of coastal nav along with 7 other Sailtime crew.
Once they complete ASA 105 – Coastal Navigation, they’ll do ASA 104 -Bareboat Chartering.
We do it backwards – 105 then 104 – because we want at-sea practice of what we learn in the classroom. On ASA 104, we head out to the Channel Islands, explore 8-10 anchorages and spend two nights aboard. In the process, we practice the DR skills learned in the classroom and add advanced lessons in GPS and radar navigation.
BTW – all our navigators use Weems and Plath equipment – rolling plotters, dividers and protractor. The test has some pretty fine tolerances and we’ve found that this is by far the best gear and yields the most accurate results.
