Sailing Southern California: Santa Barbara Island 3

I probably should have led off with this

We explored Santa Barbara Island two weeks ago. There is only one place to anchor, but there is very little competition for spots and plenty of room. In fact, a tall ship moored near us and there was room for 20 more like her.

It’s a small island, but a huge anchorage.

BTW, Fagan’s cautions about kelp and the numerous symbols for seaweed on the chart are out of date. There is very little kelp and the supposedly impossible passage between Sutil Island and Santa Barbara Island is easy to navigate.

Diminished kelp, is of course a concern for ecological reasons, but thinning out has eased navigation around this island.

I’m working on a page that will detail what we learned.

If you want to know something about our experience before I finish the page, call me at 805.750.7828.

In the meantime, you can cruise many of the Channel Islands from home by going to Capt. Dan’s Cruising Guide
