More info on pfd maintenance

Stearns Inflatable pfd

I talked to Stearns/Sospenders today to learn more about the maintenance cycle for their pfd’s. They were aghast to learn that I had a (actually several) pfd that dated to the time before the Coast Guard approved inflatables.

They reminded me that wearing one of these models does not satisfy the CG requirement of one pfd for everyone onboard. (I knew that and carry type I’s for all hands).

If we insist on using the old ones, they recommend that we test them as I did – in the pool. As an absolute minimum, orally inflate and replace the bobbin at least annually and weigh the CO2 cart to confirm it has as much CO2 in it as indicated on the cartridge.

They are adamant that the non-CG-approved vests should be “retired” and will discount the price on a new one by 25% and pay shipping. The equivalent vest is $210 on the West Marina site. A new one from Stearns is $149.24. You might save the tax as well.

So, if you’ve got a relic like mine, this is a good chance to upgrade at a considerable saving. Call 1800.588.5799.
