When your draft exceeds the water available…

Published by at 19:14 under Sailing

… you’re aground.

We’re not sure what transpired, but we do know that the area NW of the jetties at Channel Islands Harbor has been shoaling up over the last month or so. We found out on a fairly exciting kayak ride when we found ourselves in breakers where a few weeks before we’d felt safe to sail.

A couple of warning buoys might have been helpful … but what else should we be thinking about?

One possible scenario: this guy is motoring toward the harbor, motor quits, he tries to fix it, probably repeatedly pulling the starter cord on his outboard … meanwhile the swell pushes him closer and closer to the shore.

Alternatives?

Drop the hook then fool with the motor. If it quit and doesn’t start with the first restart attempt, it’s unlikely to go on the 20th.

Situational awareness is key. How much time do you have, what are the possible fixes? How can I buy time? Can I sail out of here?

And one more thing — why so close to the beach. The other likely scenario is that he just drove the damned thing until it dug in.

Good news: he’s closer to the Rudder Room than any boat this season.
