A great Labor Day weekend in Channel Islands

Smugglers Anchorage Channel Islands

A lot, a big lot, of people enjoyed the Labor Day weekend. More than 70 boats peppered the waters of Smugglers Sat. night and more than 30 were in Prisoners on Sunday. Other sailing buddies reported a half dozen or more in anchorages that normally see one or two anchors on a weekend.

I for one am glad that Labor Day signals the end of the sailing season for many cruisers. Now it’ll just be the hard corps out there.

The crowds were not really a problem in the anchorages, unless you like solitude, but people did have some big problems. One guy with a severely injured back was left ashore at Coches Prietos. Eventually rescued by USCG helo, the story must be very, very interesting. Why did the boat he was on leave? Was he really lying there more than a day? Did he fall off a cliff? It’s juicy.

A power boat reported he was on fire. CG to the rescue again.

Button 16 was absolutely abuzz, most of it the usual idiotic chit chat and radio checks, but at least in the instances above some really important stuff that was in danger of being drowned out by Green Dragon, Green Dragon, Green Dragon, this is – various boats – do you copy?

Green Dragon has lots of friends. Perhaps he can prevail on them to call only once an hour.
