Local weather doesn’t start here

Ventura Surf
Ever looked out at the ocean after a few days of fairly calm weather to see raging surf? And have you said to yourself, “where’d that come from?” And then tried to figure out what you’d seen or heard that could account for the pattern.

The storm that caused the surf, especially surf out of the south, probably came from way over the horizon. Witness today’s report:

A LARGE STORM SYSTEM CENTERED OFF THE COAST OF NEW ZEALAND HAS
GENERATED A LARGE SOUTH-SOUTHWEST SWELL. THIS SWELL ENERGY IS EXPECTED
TO BUILD ACROSS THE SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL CALIFORNIA COASTAL WATERS ON
TUESDAY…PEAKING TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY. DUE TO THE LONG
PERIOD OF THIS SWELL ENERGY…GENERALLY BETWEEN 17 AND 19 SECONDS…
