Underway checklists
Those of us who sail with Sailtime are used to the e-ttendant and the details of the check on and check off procedure. But what about getting underway from an anchorage?
Frankly, our checking is a bit shoddy, partly because we’re reduced to using our memories or the paper checklist, neither of which is very good for this occasion. So, whilst completing ASA 104 with Dean Lesiak and Richard Silva, we came up with the biggies that you should check every time you get underway from an anchorage:
Hatches closed and dogged
All gear secured – particularly check galley and check all cabinet and drawer latches
Fuel
Fresh water
Propane – stove off, LPG switch off, circuit breaker off, valve closed
Engine – oil, oil pan, leaks, coolant, hoses
Weather check
Bilge
Swim ladder stowed
Anchor stowed – check shackle seizing wire
Kayaks/dinghy secured
Let us know if you’ve been stung by other overlooked issues and we’ll add them to our list.
