Harbor dredging in Oxnard, CA

The dredge H.R. Morris is with us once again, sweeping out Channel Islands Harbor. There has been more shoaling than usual, so they’ve scheduled the operation into late November.
Local Notice to Mariners advises us to contact “Dredge H.R. Morris” on channel 16 to get passing instructions. As she’s sometimes mid-channel, it’s a good idea to do that early. Charging through is not a great idea, in fact, the last time we were out, she had to make special arrangements to get out of our way.
She displays two diamond day shapes in a vertical row on the passing side, two black balls on the danger side. The shapes are very difficult to see.
At night, green lights are on the passing side, red on the danger side. The pipe has yellow obstruction lights.

It’s not a bad idea to … Slow Down … a bit as well when coming into the territory of HS Morris !
Thought you might find this dredging exchange to be of interest. Last weekend on our way out of the harbor we saw that the Morris had placed two large buoys in the channel on her north side. We called up the Morris and asked which side “of the buoys” we should pass on. She replied “north side”. As we approached it was apparent that passing on the north side of the buoys would put us on the rocks, so we did a 180 and went back into the harbor. In the meantime another sailboat passed us, and got instructions to pass on the north side of Morris, with no mention of the buoys. We followed the second sailboat out safely. The moral: be clear about your question! They must have missed the part where I was asking about the buoys!
