Whales of Sept. Redux

Dennis Dreith, the Bosun, Tom Ryder, my son and I did our annual trip to San Miguel. At about the same time of day at about the same spot as last year we encountered a pod of Fin Whales.
Known, too, as the Finback and to those who speak Latin as Balaenoptera physalus,
these agile critters are second in mass only to the Blue Whale. The average adult is about 60′. Sancerre is 46′ and weighs a lot less than the estimated 150,000 pounds hauled around by these playful giants. You can read more details about Fin Whales at Wikipedia. But you don’t have to take our word for their inquisitiveness – checkout the video.

Thanks, Capt. Dan, for sharing that amazing footage with us. It made me feel as though I were there on board with the wind in my face and “the whale spit”— and, most of all, it made me all the more anxious to go sailing again in the Channel Islands.
Great job capturing what was undoubtedly an experience of a lifetime!
Lucky fellow!
While a spectacular treat, not really a “once in a lifetime” experience since we have seen these guys and many others on numerous occasions. Still it is miraculous each time we do. Come sailing with us…these amazing creatures are out there!
