Ventura Harbor Dockmaster … don’t confuse with Harbormaster

(If you’re looking for the story about the Thanksgiving boat accident, it’s the next one down.)

We think the Ventura Harbormaster operation is about the best on the west coast. Friendly, helpful and there in emergencies: They’ve always been great.

But don’t confuse them with the Dockmaster. The dockmaster rules the transient space near the restaurants. And, if his job is to say NO, well, he’s doing a great job, too.

There were six berths open in the vicinity of the restaurants yesterday, yet he could find none for us to use for an hour so. All we wanted was to lunch at our favorite French restaurant – Le Petite.

The dockmaster thought we should have brought a brown-bag.

The harbor is very busy right now with commercial fishing boats flooding in from colder areas. They’re in and out quite a bit. But they rarely go out for less than a couple of hours. If the dockmaster has a #2 pencil and small pad of paper, he can track estimated times of return. That way he could help us find a spot and help us spend our money at the waterfront restaurants and attractions rather than shooing us away.

Jean Luc partially solved our problem, making us platters of delectable cold cuts, pate, cheeses and salad and delivering it all to the dock personally. The styrofoam containers were nice enough and the meal was great, but the experience didn’t match the ambiance of the bistro.

And, no, Jean Luc did not ask if we wanted whine with that.
