Operation Dry Water comes to Oxnard, Ventura and the Channel Islands —- what’s that about?
Operation Dry Water – it’s not an oxymoron, but a contradiction in terms. It’s supposed to be cute, attention-getting. And it’s supposed to make you think twice about Boating Under the Influence.
NASBLA – NO, it’s not those guys, you of the filthy mind. It’s the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators who are behind the nationwide crackdown this coming weekend.
They’ve got all kinds of great don’t-drink-and-operate-a-boat announcements airing here and there, one by the captain from “Most Dangerous Catch,” one where a boat morphs into a coffin. But I think the video at the top, probably a homemade documentary underscores the message better than any number of earnest Smokey-Bear types.
If the video doesn’t do it for you, they’re taking the extra step of setting up BUI checkpoints just in case you don’t get the hint. So, if you’re headed to the Lookout after a hard day of fun on the water, you should think about walking. At least walking back.
Get the word from on high.
Perhaps that’s a poor choice of words, but it’s certainly in keeping with the tone of Operation Dry Water.
Update: I finally made contact with our local Coasties and they informed me that Operation Dry Water is secret.
Now that is scary, isn’t it RC?

Coast Guard rescues man who drove his lawnmower into the Grand River
FAIRPORT, Ohio – U.S. Coast Guard Station Fairport rescued an 84-year-old man after he drove his lawnmower accidentally off the edge of Rutherford’s Landing into the Grand River here Monday at approximately 3 p.m.
“He was a little shaken up,” said Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Adam Lutz. “Apparently, his foot slipped off the clutch when he was cutting the grass.”
Full Story
Capt. Dan: The full story includes this line for the Coast Guard’s Comedian-in-Chief: “Mariners are encouraged to invest in a VHF-FM radio as their primary means of distress alerting on the water.”
They should wait until next weekend. Last July fourth, I remember coming back into the harbor and weaving my way through about 200 imbibing electric and small powerboat operators.
Talk about clueless…
Shirly–
I couldn’t figure out why the CG would rescue a lawnmower operator. But then it hit me– He was driving a “cutter rig.”
I guess the dinghy better stay on the davits this weekend! I really wanted to play “F” that song at the Lookout, but could be trouble getting back to the boat.
