Alaska Cruising – a great adventure, but happy to be home in SoCal

Just back from our Alaska adventure with Cruise West. I learned a lot from the captain and crew of Spirit of Columbia and got other lessons just walking the docks of Seward and Cordova on Prince William Sound.

I’ll break my info down into some bite-sized chunks and publish a bit at a time.

Sheridan Glacier near Cordova, AK

If you think this looks a bit chilly, it was. The water was a small notch above freezing and, though we were close to mid-summer’s night, the air was in the low 40′s all the time we were on cruise.

And it rained. Actually only drizzled, but we stayed damp all the time we were outdoors.

Nevertheless, Alaska provided breathtaking vistas at every turn. The crew on the Cruise West ship Spirit of Columbia and our guides on the raft trip were superb.

More to follow.

About Capt. Dan

Capt. Dan is an American Sailing Association certified instructor and runs a sail charter operation in Southern California. I'm particularly interested in sailing (obviously) and ecology issues, particularly those affecting the Channel Islands here in Southern California

  1. Dan! How are you? Warmed up yet? Looking forward to hearing more about your Alaskan tour. Went up inside Passage back in 1972 for the first time on a seiner out of Bellingham, WA. Most memoriable trip I’ve ever taken! Tell more, Old Salty Dog!!!
